Fred Faulkner from Cookstown has sent in this picture of a Hewitt egg washing machine which came into vogue in the late 1930s through to the mid 1940s. It was manufactured by Sam Hewitt who lived in Richhill Castle, County Armagh.

The dirty eggs were placed into a laminated wire basket, which was placed inside a galvanised two gallon bucket of tepid water which held around eight to 10 dozen eggs. Originally the framework was agitated with a small Petter two-stroke engine as rural electrification was almost non-existent but later was driven by 1/4 hp motor.Fred remembers using these on the family farm at Annaghteige and says they were a great innovation.

Unfortunately in the late 1950s a direct-ive came from government that all so-called ‘stained’ eggs had to be ‘dry cleaned’ so the Hewitt egg washer became obsolete.There was also a three-bucket model and Fred would like to know if by chance anyone has one – he would be interested to hear from them.
