All the medals which are to be distributed to the winners of the Olympics and Paralympics are to be made out of metal extracted from small, electronic gadgets like mobile phones. As part of the ‘Tokyo 2020 Medal Project', the organising committee requested people to donate their mobile phones that are currently not in use.
Between April 2017 and March 2019, roughly 80,000 tons of mobile phones and small electronic devices were collected from all over Japan. Following the collection of the phones and refining of the metals, a designer by the name of Junichi Kawanishi was tasked with styling the medals for the 2020 edition after winning a competition earlier this year which had over 400 entrants. The committee collected nearly six million mobile phones, which were used to make around 5000 medals. These are to be awarded to the gold, silver and bronze medal-winning athletes of Tokyo 2020.
The project organisers hope that the nationwide electronics drive will help create a spirit of resourcefulness for Tokyo 2020.The medals reflect the concept that it is through the daily honing of skills that athletes strive for victory. Thus the medals resemble rough stones that have been polished and now shine brilliantly.
The front of the medal depicts Nike, the Greek goddess of victory in front of the Panathenaic Stadium in Greece and the Olympics five rings symbol.
