A first look at two newcomers hints at successful hires.
Thomas Vanek had two assists and Frans Nielsen displayed his two way
game as the Detroit Red Wings wrapped up the exhibition season Saturday
at Joe Louis Arena with a 4 3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“I think Vanek probably was our best guy today
Kyle Quincey Jersey,
made some nice plays,” captain Henrik Zetterberg said after making his
first appearance during the exhibition season. “You see what Frans can
do on the ice.”
Anthony Mantha had a quiet night until the third period, when he
used Riley Sheahan as a screen to make it 4 3. Andreas Athanasiou wasn t
much more visible

Vanek and Nielsen, signed July 1, didn’t join the Wings until this
past week because of the World Cup of Hockey. Vanek earned an assist
inside two minute when he slid into the left circle and fed Gustav
Nyquist to the right of the net for a goal at 1 46.

“I thought it was a good first game for those guys,” coach Jeff
Blashill said of Vanek and Nielsen. “Not knowing all the systems
totally, I thought they played good. Vanek did the things he has to do
to be real successful. He made some real offensive plays. I thought for
the most part he did the things defensively he needs to do.”
An opportunity to get a look power play units arose at 6 16. It took
a second Leaf going to the box for the Wings to convert, with Dylan
Larkin catching a pass down low from Henrik Zetterberg and swiping a
backhand behind Frederik Andersen.
Petr Mrazek made seven saves in the first period and several good
back to back ones during a flurry early in the second period. The
penalty killers came on duty midway through the second period, and
limited the Leafs to one shot. Larkin came out of the penalty box and
nearly scored

A fluky bounce saw Zach Hyman’s shot slide through the crease and
deflect in of Alexey Marchenko’s right skate, but Vanek helped restore a
two goal lead when he fed Brendan Smith for a goal with 14.6 seconds
left in the second period.

The Leafs made it 3 2 off a William Nylander deflection and 3 3 when
a coach’s challenge got a goaltender interference overturned and made
Brooks Laich’s goal good, all in the first minute of the third period.
Mrazek finished with 29 saves.
“I was really happy that the game was like this and they had a
really good lineup,” he said. “I was really happy that I got to play the
game today.”
Jonathan Ericsson fed a turnover to Mantha for the game winner at 11 57.
“We want to attack off any turnovers and I just tried to get open

Mantha said. “Sheahan had great net presence. I still think that puck
tipped off his skate but it’s preseason and we’ll go from there.
