Davis pulled the plug on EcoSpeed six years ago and opened Nomad Cycles, which specializes in converting existing bikes with aftermarket motors — mostly from Bafang. “Essentially, Bafang came out with their BBSHD system, and it was so good and so cheap that we just started buying theirs.”Multiple dealers and suppliers interviewed for this story said Bafang is the top motor supplier in the conversion market. “Bafang is the market leader for North America by far. They have their thumb on the conversion market,” said Adam Ostlund, co-founder of Electrify Bike Company in West Jordan, Utah. Other motor manufacturers supplying the domestic conversion market include Tongsheng — like Bafang, based in China — and CYC Motors out of Hong Kong. Promovec is a Danish brand that has opened a U.S. office with plans to begin selling conversion kits to dealers.

Other suppliers include smaller brands like Electric Bike Outfitters in Denver that source motors, battery cells and electronics from China and re-brand them for dealer and direct-to-consumer sales.

Electrify Bike Company, located in the greater Salt Lake City metro area, has expanded into multiple sales channels in recent years, offering conversion kits for sale to both dealers and consumers, doing conversions for walk-in customers and now opening a retail store to sell its own branded e-bikes. “We will build up existing bike brands and sell those as conversions,” said Ostlund.

Dealers say that price is a key factor in why consumers choose a conversion rather than a complete e-bike off a showroom floor. For the cost of a heavy, entry level e-bike, consumers who own a nice bike or frame can continue riding it with an electric conversion.

“A lot of people already own really nice bikes, but for a variety of reasons they can’t or don’t ride them anymore,” Ostlund said. “The motors we use for conversions are often the same motors used on pre-built e-bikes.” Reliable data on the size of the domestic e-bike conversion market is scant, but retailers and suppliers say sales are booming. Consultant and Light Electric Vehicle Association Chairman Ed Benjamin analyzed Customs import records to estimate that about 24,000 DIY kits entered the country last year.

Benjamin cautioned that this opaque market is challenging to track and his count may be low.

Asked to describe their customers’ demographics, dealers said they are often older individuals and retirees — the same consumers courted by e-bike brands.

The thesis went on to work out how those drawings could be stored, copied, and changed by designers. Finally, Sutherland helped create the algorithms needed to remove hidden lines in 3D drawings. This algorithm was key to developing the realistic renderings designers create today.

Though the foundation for CAD is over a half-century old, its adoption into the everyday design world didn’t happen immediately. Like the computer, the major advancements for CAD were developed in the 1980s (this was the decade that birthed AutoCAD®), and by the late 1990s, CAD adoption was widespread.

At its root, today’s CAD solutions create exact illustrations of 2D or 3D models as it simultaneously documents the design process. Today, CAD is used by engineers, graphic designers, textile designers, construction managers and, of course, architects.

Advisory warns of MedusaLocker RaaS-based model that depends upon observed split of ransom payments

U.S. agencies issued a joint cybersecurity advisory providing information on the MedusaLocker ransomware, including recent activity observed in May. The hackers predominantly rely on vulnerabilities in Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to access victims’ networks, encrypt the victim’s data and leave a ransom note with communication instructions in every folder containing an encrypted file. “MedusaLocker appears to operate as a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) model based on the observed split of ransom payments, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Department of the Treasury, and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), said in the latest advisory. “Typical RaaS models involve the ransomware developer and various affiliates that deploy the ransomware on victim systems. MedusaLocker ransomware payments appear to be consistently split between the affiliate, who receives 55 to 60 percent of the ransom, and the developer, who receives the remainder,” it added.

MedusaLocker relies predominantly on exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities in Remote Desktop Protocol to gain access to victims’ networks. It also frequently uses email phishing and spam email campaigns, with malware directly attached to the email, as initial intrusion vectors.

The agencies have asked organizations to mitigate cyber threats from ransomware, including prioritizing remediating known exploited vulnerabilities, training users to recognize and report phishing attempts, and enabling and enforcing multifactor authentication (MFA).

The advisory identified that the MedusaLocker ransomware hackers also frequently use email phishing and spam email campaigns, directly attaching the ransomware to the email, as initial intrusion vectors. “MedusaLocker ransomware uses a batch file to execute PowerShell script. This script propagates MedusaLocker throughout the network by editing the value within the infected machine’s registry, which then allows the infected machine to detect attached hosts and networks via Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) and to detect shared storage via Server Message Block (SMB) Protocol,” it added.

MedusaLocker “then restarts the LanmanWorkstationservice, which allows registry edits to take effect, kills the processes of well-known security, accounting, and forensic software, and restarts the machine in safe mode to avoid detection by security software. It also encrypts victim files with the AES-256 encryption algorithm; the resulting key is then encrypted with an RSA-2048 public key, and runs every 60 seconds, encrypting all files except those critical to the functionality of the victim’s machine and those that have the designated encrypted file extension.

It also establishes persistence, and attempts to prevent standard recovery techniques by deleting local backups, disabling startup recovery options, and deleting shadow copies, the advisory said.

MedusaLocker actors place a ransom note into every folder containing a file with the victim’s encrypted data, the joint advisory said. “The note outlines how to communicate with the MedusaLocker actors, typically providing victims with one or more email addresses at which the actors can be reached. The size of MedusaLocker ransom demands appears to vary depending on the victim’s financial status as perceived by the actors,” it added.

Some other mitigation techniques involved implementing a recovery plan that maintains and retains multiple copies of sensitive or proprietary data and servers in a physically separate, segmented, and secure location. Organizations can also implement network segmentation and maintain offline backups of data to ensure limited interruption, regularly back up data, and password-protect backup copies stored offline.

Additionally, they can install, regularly update, and enable real-time detection for antivirus software on all hosts, and review domain controllers, servers, workstations, and active directories for new and/or unrecognized accounts.

Commenting on the MedusaLocker ransomware alert, John Riggi, AHA’s National Advisor for Cybersecurity and Risk, said in a statement, “This joint agency advisory contains very detailed and actionable indicators of compromise. The advisory also highlights the danger of unsecured remote desktop protocol and phishing emails as the initial attack vector,” he added.

“The ‘ransomware as a service’ business model used by the MedusaLocker gang facilitates the continuing global proliferation of ransomware — even by relatively unsophisticated cyber actors,” according to Riggi. “It is strongly recommended that organizations continue to emphasize phishing email education for staff, exercise cyber incident response plans, and ensure the segregation and security of network and data backups, among the many helpful risk mitigation recommendations contained in the advisory,” he added.

FIFA should match $440m World Cup prize

FIFA should earmark at least $440m to provide remedy for the hundreds of thousands of migrant workers who have suffered human rights abuses in Qatar during preparations for the 2022 World Cup, Amnesty International said in a new report today, six months ahead of the tournament’s opening game.To get more news about VeboTV, you can visit vebobd.live official website.

In an open letter accompanying the report, Amnesty International and a coalition of human rights organizations, unions, and fan groups urged FIFA’s president Gianni Infantino to work with Qatar to establish a comprehensive remediation programme. As well as providing compensation for all labour abuses related to hosting the tournament in Qatar, they should ensure that abuses are not repeated, both in Qatar and in future tournaments.

To remedy the litany of abuses committed since 2010, when FIFA awarded hosting rights to Qatar without requiring any improvement in labour protections, the organizations called on FIFA to at least match the $440m it hands out in prize money at the World Cup.

“Given the history of human rights abuses in the country, FIFA knew?—or should have known?—the obvious risks to workers when it awarded the tournament to Qatar. Despite this, there was not a single mention of workers or human rights in its evaluation of the Qatari bid and no conditions were put in place on labour protections. FIFA has since done far too little to prevent or mitigate those risks,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.
By turning a blind eye to foreseeable human rights abuses and failing to stop them, FIFA indisputably contributed to the widespread abuse of migrant workers involved in World Cup-related projects in Qatar, far beyond the stadiums and official hotels.”

The sum of $440 million is likely to be the minimum necessary to cover an array of compensation costs and to support initiatives to protect workers’ rights in the future, Amnesty International has estimated. However, the total sum for reimbursing unpaid wages, the extortionate recruitment fees paid by hundreds of thousands of workers, and compensation for injuries and deaths could end up being higher, and should be evaluated as part of a participatory process with unions, civil society organizatons, the International Labour Organization and others.

“While it may be too late to erase the suffering of past abuses, FIFA and Qatar can and should act to provide redress and prevent further abuses from taking place. Providing compensation to workers who gave so much to make the tournament happen, and taking steps to make sure such abuses never happen again, could represent a major turning point in FIFA’s commitment to respect human rights,” said Agnès Callamard.As expressed in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and recognized by its own policies, FIFA has a responsibility to remedy human rights abuses it has contributed to. This responsibility should cover not only workers building football-specific facilities such as stadiums and training sites, FIFA-accredited hotels and the broadcast centre, but also the services required to operate these facilities. It should also cover those workers involved in building and servicing the transport, accommodation and other infrastructure required to host more than a million visitors expected to travel to Qatar to watch the tournament.

Equally, Qatar is also obliged to ensure remedy for every abuse on its territory, whether linked to the World Cup or not. While there has been some progress through both the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy’s initiatives and Qatar’s welcome programme of labour reforms, their respective limited scope and weak enforcement have meant that serious human rights abuses persist and migrant workers have had limited access to remedy. Ultimately, abuses suffered by workers over the past decade on all projects needed for this World Cup, have largely remained unaddressed.

“For years, the suffering of those who made this World Cup possible has been brushed under the carpet. It is about time FIFA and Qatar came together to work on a comprehensive remediation programme that puts workers at its centre and ensures that no harm remains unaddressed,” said Agnès Callamard.
