Shenzhen-based Ryan, who declined to give his family name due to fear of reprisals in China, says his three-year-old software startup has reached the point where it would be natural to expand in the U.S. - the world's biggest economy. His firm already has a million users in East Asia and a strong base in North America.
But he's dismayed by the U.S.-China trade spats and the restrictions on a growing number of Chinese companies that have been imposed, or are being proposed, by U.S. lawmakers.It's very unfair," he said, lamenting that competitors from other countries did not face similar issues when trying to expand into the United States.

Geopolitical tensions have meant a far less friendly atmosphere for mainland Chinese companies wanting to operate or gain funding in the United States, the entrepreneurs and consultants say.
"The political narrative in Washington DC and in many state capitals is based on the misconception that all Chinese companies are intertwined with and taking direction from the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party," says James McGregor, chairman for Greater China at U.S. communications consultancy APCO Worldwide.
The U.S. Commerce Department did not respond to a request for comment on attitudes towards Chinese companies within the United States.
China's foreign ministry said in a statement that some Western countries want to "politicize technology, putting up obstacles to regular technology and trade cooperation, which benefits neither side, and adversely affects global technological advancement and economic growth."

“We see more and more women interested in our watches,” said Panerai’s chief executive, Jean-Marc Pontroué, during a video call from the company’s headquarters in Neuchatel, Switzerland. In Geneva, Panerai is to introduce the Radiomir Quaranta, a watch with a white dial and a case in a new metal with the trademark Goldtech, in a 40-millimeter size. That’s large by women’s watch conventions, where there is no official range, though an average of 34 millimeters is often mentioned. But it is small for a company where most timepieces are 44 millimeters to 47 millimeters.
“Some people are afraid of our brand because they think our watches are too big,” he said, adding that he believed that Panerai was “the largest brand in big watches in the world.”
“We have a lot of women who buy Luminor Quaranta,” said Mr. Pontroué, referring to a 40-millimeter watch released last year. “So we’re anticipating the new Radiomir assortment will broaden our customer acquisition.”
And, he added: “If we can duplicate this success at 40 millimeters, we would beat Rolex tomorrow. There’s big potential here.”
Alongside the Radiomir Quaranta, there will be a pair of 45-millimeter pieces housing Panerai’s first annual-calendar movement, which would have to be adjusted just once a year, at the end of February; a 45-millimeter gunmetal piece with a California dial, the industry name for a design with no logo and half Arabic and half Roman numerals; and two other 45-millimeter references with eight-day power reserves.The Radiomir may open up Panerai’s story, but Mr. Pontroué said the plot would not change. “We will remain a masculine, big-size brand, but one which happens to sell to the new generation and to women,” he said.

Beijing has displayed a growing distrust of foreign companies, cracking down on international consultancies and expanding the country’s counter-espionage law last month.
“Unfortunately after two decades of mutual benefit, global tensions have risen between China and the US,” said Michael Kelly, global head of multi-asset at PineBridge Investments, a New York-based asset management firm.Chinese stocks began a sharp rally in late October on hopes that the country would exit its costly zero-Covid policy. In early December, Beijing ditched the stringent restrictions, which resulted in a quick rebound in economic activity.
But despite solid consumption-led growth of 4.5% in the first quarter, recent economic data point to an uneven recovery in the world’s second largest economy.
On Tuesday, China released a batch of economic data for April, which largely disappointed investors. Nomura and Barclay lowered their forecasts to 5.5% and 5.3%, respectively, after the data release. But UBS and Goldman Sachs maintained their growth projections, which are 5.7% and 6% for the year.
The consumer price index rose by just 0.1% in April, the slowest pace in more than two years. The producer price index, which measures factory-gate prices, declined by 3.6%, marking the biggest contraction in three years, and underscoring the risk of deflation.Imports plunged 7.9% in April, reinforcing signs of feeble domestic demand. As for employment, the jobless rate for 16- to 24-year-olds hit a record high of 20.4% in April.
China’s “faltering” real estate sector, formerly the economy’s main driver, remains a major worry, said Silvers. Over the past few decades, the sector has accounted for as much as 30% of China’s GDP.
On Wednesday, the National Bureau of Statistics reported that new home prices rose by just 0.3% in April, after 0.4% in March, suggesting that the pent-up demand may be fading after the end of pandemic restrictions. Before February, home prices had been in a historical decline for about 18 months.
